Toivalan Metalli is a family-owned company located in the heart of North Savonia, Finland, and established in 1978 by Raimo Kolehmainen. The company initially served the carpentry industry, producing parts like bench frames and table legs.
“Our father started the business with a simple idea: to meet customer needs with dedication and quality,” recalls Juha Kolehmainen, CEO and co-owner. Today, Toivalan Metalli is run by Juha and his brother Timo, who lead a team of 20 skilled professionals. Together, they have built a reputation for delivering high-quality metal parts and assemblies to industries ranging from defense equipment to machine manufacturing, hydraulic systems, and artistic projects.
A Strategic Leap Into Laser Cutting
One of the pivotal moments in Toivalan Metalli’s history came in 2018 when the brothers decided to invest in their own fiber laser cutting machine. For years, the company had outsourced laser-cut components, but this approach proved increasingly inefficient. “We got tired of waiting and paying for external services,” Juha explains. “That’s when we decided to bring laser cutting in-house.”
The Eagle iNspire 1530 6.0 kW fiber laser was their choice - capable of cutting up to 25 mm thick steel, stainless steel, aluminum, 12 mm brass, and 10 mm copper with extraordinary precision. The decision-making process, like many at Toivalan Metalli, unfolded in an unconventional setting. “All big decisions are made in the sauna,” Juha laughs. “My brother and I discussed it thoroughly and trusted our long-time supplier, Vossi, without much comparison shopping.”
The machine has lived up to expectations, drastically improving operational efficiency. “Now we get laser cuts faster and cheaper, and the precision is incredible,” Juha notes. “It’s especially impressive for small details, like tiny holes in thick materials.” The Eagle laser has not only streamlined production but also opened new possibilities for the company’s projects.

Toivalan Metalli’s work extends beyond industrial manufacturing. Over the years, they have collaborated with artists to create stunning metal artworks displayed across Finland. The company’s range of equipment reflects this versatility. In addition to the Eagle laser, they have a sanding machine for laser-cut parts, two press brakes, a mechanical plate cutter, and a pipe-bending machine. This arsenal allows them to serve diverse customers, including construction companies, elevator manufacturers, and private individuals.
Challenges, Opportunities, and the Road Ahead
Like any growing company, Toivalan Metalli faces challenges, particularly in terms of space. “We don’t have room for new equipment right now,” Juha admits. While they may consider upgrading their laser technology in the future, their current focus is on maximizing the capabilities of their existing machine.
The rapid advancement of laser technology is something the brothers keep an eye on. “New, more powerful machines are constantly entering the market,” Juha acknowledges. “Someday, we’ll have to make another big decision in the sauna!”
For now, the Eagle laser continues to play a vital role in the company’s success. “The machine has been excellent—no major issues, just consistently fast and powerful,” Juha says.
